Great Interdiction I
Quizbowl Tournament

BAAL commemorates the interdiction of England by Pope Innocent III in 1208
14 teams converged on UC Berkeley's Barrows Hall on Sunday, 23 March 2003 for BAAL's first ever tournament in commemoration of the Interdiction of England 795 years ago.
Congratulations to the team from Berkeley High School (Gabe, Nick, Sam, Gordon) who went 8-0 and captured the tournament title. Congratulations also to Nick who was the tournament's top scorer. Runners up were Mission San Jose A whose only losses came to Berkeley. Thanks also to those who helped out with moderating and scorekeeping without whom this would not have run well. That was much appreciated. Thanks to all the teams that came out: Berkeley, Aragon, Vanden, Mission San Jose, Saint Joe Notre Dame, Mike from College Prep, Luis from San Mateo, Bentley, De La Salle, Clayton Valley and San Leandro.
We did things a little differently in terms of format: to take away the emphasis bonus points play in a quiz bowl tournament we decided to only award a bonus question after one team had earned two tossups consecutively except after tossups 19 and 20 which carried a bonus questions regardless (not counting questions that go dead or negs the other team does not pick up). This made for closer matches and forced teams to try to build momentum. Certainly its a break from the usual format and we invite criticism but it was generally well received.
Stats were done on my IBM A21m ThinkPad using Chris Sewell's SQBS program (v2.0) which, having finally used it, is an absolute pleasure. So props go out there. Very easy to use, it does a great job accounting for half games played and producing reports on the fly.
