The 1st Annual Rubicon Quiz Bowl Tournament
January 10, 2004 @ College Preparatory School in Oakland
Congratulations to Menlo-Atherton High School for their victory in the inaugural Rubicon Quiz Bowl tournament!
The extremely well balanced team of Collin Cronkite, Daniel Altman and Rachel Barclay (with a lil help from Alex and James, not of M-A) endured an early loss to Berkeley A in their 2nd match but 8 straight wins later emerged with the tournament title. Your runner up was Bentley B. By virtue of their top two finishes, Menlo-Atherton and Bentley B have earned the right to compete at the NAQT National Tournament in June!
Rubicon, a BAALT style tournament which used NAQT IS-38, featured 14 teams that converged on CPS on Satuday, 10 January 2004. Teams began the day with an abbreviated 5 round robin. During lunch, teams were re-positioned based on record and other performance factors and played 3 power-matched rounds. At the end of those 3 rounds, Menlo-Atherton (7-1), Bentley B (6-2), Berkeley A (6-2) and Mission San Jose A (5-3) were seeded 1-4. In the semifinal matches, Menlo-Atherton defeated MSJ A (265-180) and Bentley B defeated Berkeley A (270-70) to set up the championship match which Menlo-Atherton won on the final question 180-150.
Thanks again to all who helped out - especially College Prep for providing the facility - it was fantastic. Thanks to all who came out, Mission San Jose, Bentley, Granada, Clayton Valley, St. Joseph Notre Dame, Menlo-Atherton and of course our two hosts Berkeley and College Prep.
Stats were done on my IBM A21m ThinkPad using Chris Sewell's SQBS program (v3.0r) which included a custom modification to account for BAALT style's need to track the number of bonuses heard. Thanks to Chris Sewell for making that change!
